Erika

Her joyful personality shines through in everything she does, especially when she’s around animals. She shares a special bond with her red heeler, Odie, who she’s had since he was a puppy. Now almost seven years old, Odie still gets mistaken for a pup thanks to his endless energy and playful nature. The two are truly inseparable, having lived together in Kelowna, British Columbia for three and a half years before returning home in August of last year. The move marked a new chapter in Erika’s life as she began studying in the Veterinary Technician program at Algonquin College, with plans to graduate in 2026.

Erika’s love for animals started early. She grew up in Almonte on what she fondly calls her parents’ “funny farm,” home to an eclectic mix of sheep, goats, chickens, horses, mules, donkeys, dogs, cats, and birds. That environment instilled in her a deep respect and compassion for all creatures, even if it took her a little time to realize that a career in animal care was where she truly belonged.

Before beginning her journey in veterinary medicine, Erika studied History at Queen’s University. Today, in addition to Odie, she shares her home with a miniature dachshund named Chester and a cat named Tonks.

Although she once feared she wouldn’t be able to handle the emotional challenges of veterinary work, particularly euthanasia, Erika has come to see her empathy as her greatest strength, one that helps her connect deeply with both animals and their people.
